California Proposes Law To Eventually Ban All Tobacco Sales

LA TIMES - 2023

Many California lawmakers have introduced proposals to make it illegal to sell cigarettes and other products to anybody born after January 1, 2007, in an attempt to eventually ban all tobacco sales in the country's most populous state. If passed into law, by 2073, everyone wanting to buy cigarettes will have to present identification proving they are 67 years of age or older. This law is modeled after a similar law in New Zealand, which has shown success. Those who use or own tobacco products would not receive punishment under the law. Instead, it would issue penalties on businesses who sold to them. According to the state, anybody who is worried about the public health of our state and the wellbeing of our children should prioritize preventing the future generation of Californians from forming a smoking habit.

  3. Tobacco production causes a variety of environmental problems, such as energy and water usage, toxic waste, and greenhouse gas emissions.

  4. Global tobacco leaf and product transportation causes a large amount of air pollution.

  5. Through poisonous emissions and greenhouse gases, tobacco smoke has an impact on persons who smoke, those nearby, and the environment.

  6. Tobacco and cigarette dumping produce a large quantity of trash and release harmful chemicals to the environment.
