FDA to Order Juul E-Cigarettes Off U.S. Market

Wall Street Journal News | June 2022

The Food and Drug Administration is preparing to order Juul Labs Inc. to take its e-cigarettes off the U.S market. This process would take nearly two years to review the data presented by the vaping company.

The FDA have been uncertain of Juul since four years ago when Juul's fruity flavors were blamed for the increase of underaged vaping.

An FDA order against Juul would have a negative impact for Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc., which in 2018 paid $12.8 billion for a 35% support in Juul which valued at about $35 billion. Underage vaping has decreased in the U.S. since FDA put restrictions to raise the legal purchase age for tobacco products to 21 and banned the sale of sweet and fruity e-cigarette refill cartridges

Biden Administration Plan to Reduce Nicotine in Cigarette

June 21, 2022

The Biden Administration and the FDA are committed to propose a rule by May 2023 to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes to minimally or non-addictive levels. Less addictive levels, in turn, would encourage millions of smokers to quit or switch to less harmful options. For this proposal to give maximum impact, the FDA would need to require a reduction in nicotine levels in all combustible tobacco products, not just cigarettes, to prevent switching to other harmful products.
