Best Quality Improvement Story

April 3rd - The Health Promotion - Tobacco Use Prevention Program, Cessation for Homeless was voted the Best Quality Improvement (QI) Story during the Public Health QI & New Tech Showcase at the Orange County Health Care Agency. By using quality improvement tools, NEW-LUNG was able to boost participant numbers. This year, NEW-LUNG implemented a specially curated cirriculum for the homeless population and have made services available at 6 local homeless-serving facilities. NEW-LUNG has provided cessation services to 170 homeless participants. This has exceeded this year’s goal of serving 50 participants at 5 different organizations.

Orange County Register - In March, NEW-LUNG published a full page, full color advertisement for quit smoking services in the Orange County Register. The print ad ran each Sunday until April 21st. The purpose of the ad was to motivate people to quit on Monday, which is the most popular day of the week for starting new and healthy habits.

Staff Spotlight

Before coming to NEW-LUNG, I worked at a mental health facility as a caseworker, ensuring patients are meeting their personal goals. It was an opportunity for me to connect to people and understand their struggles. It was rewarding because I was giving people the opportunity for a fulfilling life.

Since I started working at NEW-LUNG, I have improved my communication skills through conversing with participants and negotiating with directors. I charish this opportunity that allows me build compassion and learn about people and their plights. It puts everything in perspective and helps me understand why people decide to take certain paths in life. They’re more than just a habit, they’re real people who have real struggles. I value the conversations and personal bonds I have with my participants.
